Our Liberal Arts Foundation: The Trivium
Zaytuna believes that rigorous study in the traditional skills of grammar, logic, and rhetoric is not only essential to a proper college education but also contributes to the ultimate perfection of the human person. Without mastery of these skills, language loses meaning, reason ceases to guide our thought, and our emotions seek in vain for measured expression. Zaytuna goes back to its classical roots in the Islamic and Western traditions that exemplify the perfection of grammatical forms, the clarity of the methods of logic, and the eloquence of the canons of rhetoric. Once accomplished in these skills, the Zaytuna student can approach other courses, such as Law, Theology, History, Philosophy, and the Sciences, "in an orderly and easy manner and without error." Given that the Trivium is an integral part of the Zaytuna curriculum, the college expects all faculty members to have substantial experience in studying and teaching these traditional skills.
