Description of Famous Maghrebi Divine Name, Allah

The artwork is a printed reproduction print of a popular Maghrebi calligraphic panel written in the famous al-Qandusi thuluth script.

The 19th-century Muslim saint (wali) Shaykh Muhammad Bin Al-Qasim al-Qandusi (sometimes spelled al-Qundusi) was an herbalist and calligrapher who was born in Qanaadasa in the Maghreb region. He immigrated to Fez where he sold herbs. His calligraphy has become extremely famous and this calligraphic panel is a traditional take on the name of Allah he calligraphed that is located in the Zawiya of Idriss II in Fes.

The focus of the art piece is the Divine Name 'Allah' (ٱللَّٰهُ) followed by the phrase 'May his glory be glorified!' (جَلَّ جَلَالَهُ).

Surrounding the Name Allah is Ayat al-Kursi:

Allah! There is no deity save Him, the Alive, the Eternal. Neither slumber nor sleep overtaketh Him. Unto Him belongeth whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth. Who is he that intercedeth with Him save by His leave? He knoweth that which is in front of them and that which is behind them, while they encompass nothing of His knowledge save what He will. His throne includes the heavens and the earth, and He is never weary of preserving them. He is the Sublime, the Tremendous.

Along the outer border is calligraphed the 99 Most Beautiful Names of God or Asma’ al-Husna'.

The boxed calligraphy contains Surah al-Ikhlas (الْإِخْلَاص) which translates to 'Sincerity' and is also known as The Declaration of God's Unity (التوحيد). The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has described the Surah as being equal to one-third of the Holy Quran. It reads:

۝ Say: He is Allah, One ۝ Allah As-Samad ۝ He begets not, nor was He begotten ۝ And there is none comparable to Him

(Quran, 112)
