Announcing The Zaytuna College Fall 2018 Book Club Lineup

The Zaytuna College Bookstore will host multiple Book Club events throughout the 2018 Fall semester. Join Imam Zaid Shakir and Imam Dawood Yasin on the last Thursday of each month through December for in-depth discussions on a variety of books that will change the way you see the world.

In September, Strangers in Their Own Land by Arlie Hochschildwill be discussed - a detailed, five-year journey deep in a Tea Party stronghold that shares insights into why the conservative movement resonates so strongly with voters and why they feel a chasm between themselves and “a new elite.”

Fire in the Lake by Francis Fitzgerald will be the focus of October – based on Frances Fitzgerald's many years of research and travels, takes us inside the history of Vietnam - the traditional, ancestor-worshiping villages, the conflicts between Communists and anti-Communists, Catholics and Buddhists, generals and monks, the disruption created by French colonialism, and America's ill-fated intervention - and reveals the country as seen through Vietnamese eyes. 

In November, we will cover Servants of Allah by Sylvianne Diouf. It presents a history of African Muslims, following them from West Africa to the Americas. Although many assume that what Muslim faith they brought with them to the Americas was quickly absorbed into the new Christian milieu, as Sylviane A. Diouf demonstrates in this meticulously-researched, groundbreaking volume, Islam flourished during slavery on a large scale. 

Finally, in December, the Book Club will be based on the book Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee by Dee Brown. It is an eloquent, meticulously documented account of the systematic destruction of the American Indian during the second half of the nineteenth century.

All events will take place at Zaytuna College, 2401 Le Conte Ave. Berkeley, CA 94709. Doors for all events will open at 6:30 PM, followed by the program, which will begin at 7:00 PM.
